Cycle of Socialization – unicorp essays


Students will demonstrate their ability recognize the dynamics of power, privilege, andsocial injustice, including how these factors may impact overall well being of clients bycompleting an 8-10-page paper that focuses on their own cycle of socialization to theworld. In this paper, students will also describe how they interact with diverse clients in anethical manner.
It is mandatory to reference Harro article in-text and on reference page.  Since much of this paper is reflective and based on your own experiences, there is not a mandatory number of references. 
Papers should include the following bolded headings and address the following elements. 
1. Introduction
2. Engaging in stereotyping, prejudice or discrimination-Describe an occasion when you stereotyped, were prejudiced toward, ordiscriminated against others.
3. Consequences of stereotyping, prejudice or discrimination- What were the effects of the incident? Discuss the experience with a focus on the cognitive, emotional, and/or behavioral consequences of this experience. 
4. Experiences of stereotyping, prejudice or discrimination- How does the incident you identified above compare to an occasion when you perceived that you were a victim of stereotyping, prejudice, or discrimination?
5. Consequences of stereotyping, prejudice or discrimination-What were the effects of the incident, n terms of cognitive, emotional, and/or behavioral consequences of this experience. 
6. Cycle of Socialization Model- Utilize each step of the Cycle of Socialization Model (Harro, 2000) to explainhow your behaviors came to be and why the target individual/group wasvulnerable to you (remember that you are explaining behaviors and not excusingthem).

7. Direction for Change-  For the Direction for Change component of the cycle, identify possible clientgroups with whom you may find working a challenge based on their differencesand your biases.  Then, discuss actions that you will/are taking to assure that you followethical practices as a social worker and that current and future clients assigned toyou as a social work professional are not victims of the cycle (think in terms ofmicro to macro action) and that your own socialization does not lead to unethicalactions.

8. Conclusion: Identify what have you learned about your socialization process and identify any areas of ambiguity that are still present.
