Term Paper Part 1 Instruction
As stated on the Syllabus, one major graded assignment for the course is a term
project, which contains three parts. The purpose of this assignment is for you to get
experience with the overall process of conducting scientific, experimental research.
The research topic for the Term Paper is intervention activities can increase ones
happiness level. With this research topic in mind, the instruction below is for Part 1-
Literature Review.
1. Content of the Paper: This literature review is also called an introduction
section for your final research paper. In this part, you will be required to read
relevant research on the provided research topic. I have listed out some
empirical journal articles for your reference. Please check the Term Paper
Journal Articles section in the course module. You will need to summarize and
connect the findings from the empirical research articles, critique them, and then
use them to support an argument for why a study should/need to be done. The
argument you write will need to be organized and concise, while showing
competency for interpreting research articles.
Basically, I would like you to explore the related intervention variables which can
boost happiness. These variables include but not limit to:
Counting ones blessings
Performing acts of kindness
Using ones strength in a new way
Writing letters of gratitude
Writing ones Best Possible Self (BPS)
Volunteering
Eventually we will narrow down these listed variables to two (say writing
letters of gratitude and writing ones BPS) and design an experimental two-
way ANOVA study, which is the second part of this term paper.
2. References: The paper should include 6 or more references; all should be from
reputable scholarly sources and at least 4 of your references must primarily
contain reports of empirical research. No secondary sources may be included.
You can use the journal articles I provided in the course module, or you can
search and find other related or similar journal articles on this happiness
research topic.
3. Format: The paper should be in APA format, double-spaced in MS Word with
12 pt. Times New Roman font and 1 margins on all 4 sides.
4. Direct quotations: You should keep the number of direct quotations to a
minimum, no more than four or five. Use them only where the exact wording of
the original is important. Citations and direct quotations must be in APA format.
5. Length: Your paper should be 5-7 pages long (this includes your title page but
reference pages).
6. When to submit the paper: Submit the paper during the Week of 9 (03/07-
03/13), with a deadline of 03/13, 11:59PM.
** Important: Please allocate your time accordingly and make couples of
changes before your submission by the due date of 03/13.
7. Where to submit the paper: Submit your paper online to the Term Paper
Assignment Submission Folder, which can be found from the top tool bar
Activities – Assignments Term Paper Part 1. In addition, you need to submit
the same paper to Ms. McLanes lab module for grading
s three parts. The purpose of this assignment is for you to get
experience with the overall process of conducting scientific, experimental research.
The research topic/question for the Term Paper is intervention activities can increase
ones happiness level. With this research question in mind, Part 2 instruction is listed
below.

1. Cover Page, Abstract, and Introduction should be your revised Term Paper
Part 1.
2. Method
In this section, please address Participants, Design, Materials, and Procedure.
a) Participants: we will have 24 participants total.
Please describe the relevant details of the participants, including
demographic information of the participants, how the participants were
selected and assigned to the study conditions.
b) Design: It should be a two-way (2×2) ANOVA experimental research. Please
address the dependent variable, i.e., happiness in this study, and provide
operational definition of happiness.
Define the two independent variables (IVs) and describe the levels of each of
the two IVs.
For the two independent variables, as I mentioned in Term Paper Part 1,
please choose from the list below:
Counting ones blessings
Performing acts of kindness
Using ones strength in a new way
Writing letters of gratitude
Writing ones Best Possible Self (BPS)
Volunteering
c) Materials: Describe what instrument and materials were used in this study.
For measurement of Happiness, as I mentioned for Term Paper Part 1, we
will use Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ, 2002).
Hill, P., & Argyle, M. (2002). The Oxford Happiness Questionnaire: A compact
scale for the measurement of psychological well-being. Personality and
Individual Differences, 33(7), 1073-1082.
In this section, you should give a detailed account of OHQ, i.e., how many
items it includes, how it scores, and one or two examples of the questionnaire
items. In addition, describe in detail what materials you had used for the two
IVs.
d) Procedure: Please provide detailed information on what the participants
experienced in the study, what instructions were given to the participants,
tasks performed by the participants, and how the participants were assigned
to the conditions.
3. Results
In this section, please state the dependent variable analyzed and the tests used
to analyze it. Make statements about the results, indicating differences or
relationships found, with statistical values to support it.
Make sure to report the two main effects, interaction effect, and include a graph
for the result.
Here are the simulated data for this study. In this set of data, the two
independent variables are Writing Letters of Gratitude and Writing Ones Best
Possible Self (BPS). Each of the two IVs has two levels – either writing or not.
You can change the independent variables based on your design, but I hope you
will use this set of data. If you have SPSS or JASP, please go ahead run the
ANOVA results. Meanwhile, I will provide the SPSS output for this data set.
