Deliverables

Learners will compile a table that will help identify threats and opportunities to the organization using Porters Forces.

Learners will write a 7-9 page research paper that contains the following content sections:

Section 1: Introduction:

1. Compose a strong introduction that describes what your research paper is about, without losing sight of the overall project.

2.  Compose a thesis for your research paper.

Section 2: Your Organization:

3. Identify the competitive advantages of your organization compared to other firms in the industry.

4. Evaluate the long-run sustainability of the competitive advantages of your organization.

Section 3: Opportunities and Threats:

5. Identify the opportunities that were identified in Porters Forces table in order of most important to least, as well as market forces.

6. Identify the threats that were identified in Porters Forces table in order of most important to least, as well as market forces.

Start with the big picture:  Using Porters Forces, perform research to find how the various aspects of the market may be changing.  Youll need to relate each of your findings down to the basic aspect of the market.  For each finding, will it influence supply or demand?  Will it change market equilibrium?  How, in terms of market price and quantity sold?  Use the convenient table below to summarize your findings.

Table Instructions As you fill out the table, notice that it does not ask you to relate your opportunities or threats to a particular aspect of Porters Forces. Porters Forces is merely a model (a particular way of mapping the forest) that will help guide your research and thinking. Once opportunities and threats have been identified it matters not which part of the model it applied to. Note:  Each line of the table (in other words, each finding) is independent of the others; dont try and summarize impacts on market equilibrium and/or supply/demand across findings fill out your table so that each line is independent. Please note that in the simple Market Model that we are using factors can only impact one curve at a time.  For example, you determine that the growing national income of households will impact your organization.  That would be an increase in demand only.  If you are working through a factor and have it impacting supply and demand you are thinking about the model incorrectly.  Go back and decide which curve would be impacted first and that is the one you would demonstrate in the table.  You will submit this table with your paper.

Now that you have a completed the table that summarizes the results of your research (potential opportunities and threats, what you anticipate the impact of supply and demand to be), sort your table so that all the opportunities are grouped together and all the threats are grouped together. Use Word Tools (or Excel if you did this in Excel).

Prioritize your opportunities and threats. Try and group them logically by looking for trends, groupings, and commonalities.

Now that you have gathered and organized the information relevant to your project objectives, you are ready to begin writing. Follow the sequence below to ensure your paper meets the requirements.

Essay Instructions

Begin with a strong introduction that describes what your study is about, without losing sight of the overall project.

Once you have stated your thesis, begin the body of your paper with a brief description of your firm and its competitive advantage(s), if they have any (many dont).

Next, provide a summary of the opportunities you identified in your table. This should include what you see as the significant groupings of opportunities, in order of most important to least, as well as market forces. Defend rigorously.

Now address the threats in the same way you have the opportunities, per the instructions above.

Conclude your paper with a discussion of what you think is most important to address in the strategy process. Carefully explain why.

DO NOT MAKE STRATEGY RECOMMENDATIONS AT THIS POINT. Simply conclude with your overall assessment of your findings in terms of opportunities and/or threats. Strategy recommendations come later, in BBA 1-F.

Finalize your paper. Check the rubrics to ensure you have covered all the relevant points, proofread for complete and accurate citations for all references and direct quotes using the APA format or whatever format you choose (designated in the title page), including a reference page. Once this is completed submit along with your table.

Suggestions
While you work through this project, keep the points below in mind.
First, many solid firms with excellent products were killed by changing market forces, changing competition, and new technologies. It could easily happen to your firm. The road to bankruptcy is littered with dead firms who didn’t pay attention to the external market. This project will help you locate and understand the vulnerabilities your firm has to face beyond its own walls, and therefore, beyond its control. But worry not; you are being well trained to survey potential market forces and their impacts. Upon completion of this project you will be able to anticipate changes before they occur or recognize that consumer tastes and preferences are changing – and make the appropriate changes to your organization BEFORE the change actually occurs! This summarizes the power of regular external Company Analysis in the strategy development process.
Second, do not begin writing your paper until youve done all your research. Things will change; new findings will emerge later in your research that may override something you earlier thought to be important. Get your table completely filled out and then stare at it. Figure out what is subtly being said in between the lines of what you found. Figure out what the real issues are. You will save yourself a lot of time and trouble if you put in the necessary research time before you begin writing the paper.
Submit your assignment using the submission dropbox (link is on the right side of the page).
The project coach will provide an evaluation of your project deliverable and determine mastery of the competency-based deliverable, on the associated assessment rubric. The project coach will also provide direct feedback of your deliverable if the project submission does not meet all of the learning outcomes.  If the project submission demonstrates mastery of the associated competency, the project coach will also provide value-added feedback and provide the learner an opportunity to resubmit the project deliverable for an overall project evaluation of exceeds.  Resubmissions of projects that demonstrate mastery must be resubmitted within the current semester timeframe.
